Best Intel Processors in India 2019 – Reviews & Buyer’s Guide

As small as they appear, Intel processors are crucial components of a computer. These are also known as the processor or the CPU. And yes, it is good to note that the CPU is a “component” but the entire machine is not a CPU. For non-technical people like us, processors can be found as pretty basic on the surface wherein it may not seem to hard to understand especially when it comes to buying for performance sake. However, in reality, the processors are more advanced on the inside compared to the surface.

If a processor has a much higher frequency compared to another processor, then it does not prove to show that it is a better processor at all. Actually, core counts and clock speeds can be compared accurately within the same company only. Differences, in general, can outstandingly broaden the performance gap without having the need to change anything when it comes to the clock speed or the core count.

This wide misunderstanding still subsists ever since the rise of 21st-century processors have been introduced. From then, till now, core counts and clock speeds still make a huge impact in today’s digital age. There were days where the processor reached 800 Megahertz which was certainly a noble achievement, therefore, having several processing cores is far more than awe-inspiring.

In contrast, as technologies progressed over the years, different core counts and clock speeds have been limited towards definite physical limitations. This is related primarily to both power and heat consumption only. However, these restrictions can be overcome as time progresses along with advanced developments in technologies. In addition, consumer processors are being designed with a maximum of 3 – 4GHz, whereas ‘overclockable’ processors can operate at a temporary rate of 9+GHz since it uses a solution which is temporary for the time being such as liquid nitrogen cooling.

Regardless of upgrading or constructing your own PC, the CPU has a special role to play out. Increasing the core counts and clock speeds make a great impact on the overall performance since it supports a responsive system, offers quick turnarounds on difficult and time-consuming tasks such as video transcoding and sleeker gameplay. Also, the chip you consider will determine the motherboard purchase since each CPU only operate using a certain socket with a set of chipsets.

As we move forward in this guide, you will get to know the best Intel processors in 2018 and which ideal one you should be getting to enjoy enhanced computing performances in the near future.

To start off, let’s understand the following a bit more in detail before comparing and purchasing processors:

As stated before, core counts and clock speeds are worth for something but are only applicable within the same hardware family- between members in fact. In addition, they are compared if the processors are produced within a few years of each other. Despite this, the latest and advanced processors which have the same clock speed and core count will still have incremental collations to a certain degree.

As you purchase an Intel processor in order to enhance your CPU performance, you need to use a Device Manager in order to understand the type of processor you have already integrated currently. In order to this on Windows, try typing in “device manager” in the Start menu and open “processors” so that you can know the CPU name.

Starting from the CPU name, recognize the CPU slot which your motherboard uses – thus within the same slot, you can upgrade your CPU to other CPUs. Also, it is a good idea to upgrade the BIOs as well but it depends on when the series was published. When purchasing a processor for a complete brand new PC build, then do consider the latest series from Intel. During the time of writing which is of late 2015, Intel’s current desktop architecture was Skylake. What’s intriguing about Intel’s improvements was that it was more iterative and regular.

With this in mind, let’s talk about the considerations before you purchase an Intel processor.

The Ideal Brand Of All- Intel

To all the PC-building aficionados, this statement is not so contentious: AMD chips known to be much better compared to budget builds. Regardless of the ongoing lineup age, AMD tends to charge their chips at a very competitive rate when compared to Intel’s choices. If you are that user who does not want to spend or intensively play ‘CPU-dependent’ titles, then AMD chips are more suitable since they can perform at the same level or even better compared to Intel chips which have the same selling price range.

On the other hand, what’s more, disputable is that AMD does not cross over boundaries when it comes to competing with Intel in regards to the high-end hardware. Ever since AMD introduced their processing architecture, they have not been able to introduce new and better chips in order to challenge Intel’s advanced, greatest, and the latest. Even though Intel may not have a suitable value proposal compared to AMD, but when it comes to purchasing high-end, the best option is to usually go with the current or advanced Intel’s i5 or i7 series.

If you are considering only a one-time purchase only along with no intention to enhance upgrades then AMD is a good choice for you. However, we suggest choosing Intel since even though AMD introduces new processors in the market, they will not be suitable or work well with the latest motherboards, therefore, users will need to switch completely to a brand new architecture layout and slot. When choosing AMD, you still will be keeping a comparable low limit on the performance levels even though you wish to upgrade.

At the same time, Intel happened to change only sockets, but will not develop them for at least few years ahead since this gives them the opportunity to create and develop brand new architectures which enable you to enhance your processor to its maximum limit in order to own the ideal CPU which can be compatible with the frame.

Essential Need – Play or Productivity?

AMD takes the sailing advantage in this case. Even though AMD does not perform well in few CPR-dependent titles compared to Intel processors and is priced at a low range; these chips are popular and ideal for professional and rendering applications due to the usage of cores which are low-powered of which they own.

If you wish to obtain the best in productivity levels and enhanced gaming performances, though, you may want to invest in an Intel i7. i7s can have multiple price ranges wherein you can find them at a decent price or even goes higher up to an extent. Without a doubt, these chips are exceedingly powerful chips and can be used for many purposes – no matter what you may do with your PC. To those users who wish to experience the ultimate gaming performance, then don’t bother getting an i7. The i5 does a much better job in most cases since it offers the same gaming experience and performance levels. However, an i5 can’t carry out other tasks well such as streaming or rendering.

What Do You Aim To Do with Your CPU?

Even though it may seem tempting to invest for the best as much as you can on a CPU, you are well off saving your cash for other important components. What’s more important is to determine the maximum budget levels you can invest based on what you want your computer to perform along with the processor type as well.

Normal Tasks

Try looking for a decent price range. If you wish to purchase a chip which enables you to view videos, perform simple productivity tasks such as basic spreadsheet models and word processing, and browse the Web, then getting a chip which is of an entry-level with either two or four cores might be just what you are looking for. However, if you find yourself being involved doing a lot more than one of the simple tasks mentioned above all at once, then it would be beneficial to upgrade to a better model.

An Intel Celeron is suitable since it is at the low end of the market with a good price range and you can opt for the Intel Pentium which is a high-end product in the market.

Gaming

If a user is primarily intrigued towards the gaming performance, then he/she would need to look at Intel processors at a mid-level range such as the Intel Core i5. When you consider the graphics card to be the most crucial element for gaming compared to the processor, then you can save the expenditure by not getting a powerful chip.

Overclocking or Creative Media Work

If a user wishes to access a good speed or want more cores for say, video edit processing, or even just aim to have a capable, quick system with additional overhead for computing tasks in the future, then we suggest investing on a Ryzen chip, Core i7, or even the Core i9. Moreover, it is interesting to note that these are the chips of which you can consider when you wish to overclock. Although, AMD’s lower end Ryzen chips are even overclockable and even performs pretty well. The best Intel processors in 2018 do offer overclocking features which enable you to have access to amazing speed levels.

Workstation Purposes

When a user finds him/herself deals with complicated math functions and huge databases, or even patiently waiting for minutes or even hours for their current system to carry out the rendering process of their 4K or 3D animation video, then try considering an AMD Threadripper or an Intel Core X CPU. These magnificent devices provide colossal amounts of physical cores in order to carry out maximal multitasking such as editing and gaming at high settings when streaming online. Or maybe, perform time-consuming and tedious computing tasks. Users who have online or even offline businesses users can contemplate an Intel Xeon or even an AMD EPYC processor, however, these are not so consumer friendly.

Generation CPUs

As the years’ progress, Intel and AMD enhance their dedicated processor lines by using a brand new architecture. Currently, Intel’s generation is the “9th Gen Core Series,” which has a peculiar code name which is known as the “Ice Lake.” In addition, AMD’s current chips belong to its Ryzen 2000 (which is also known as the Ryzen 2) line. As you look for the model number, you can view the generation as the first integer out of the four numbers such as the 9 in Core i9-9900K or even the 2 in Ryzen 7 2700X.

It is good to note that both of the companies still do not update their advanced chips to the latest generation. Therefore, with the advanced and the best Intel X series CPUs, you can still obtain the 7th gen. For AMD users, you can obtain the advanced AMD Thread Rippers which are part of the Ryzen gen 1,000 (1 series).

Even though you have the advantage of choosing former processor generations which are still up for sale, we wouldn’t suggest you consider it unless you are okay with choosing a motherboard which is not compatible with the advanced chips in the future. Furthermore, you do not generally save a lot of money by opting for a last-generation processor, either. To give an example, during the press time, the difference of the price between a former 7th-Gen, Core i5-7400 (7th Gen) and its successor, the 8th Gen Core i5-8400 was just a dollar.

How To Read Model Numbers and Names?

The splatter of numbers and brands which make up a product name for a CPU can be perplexing. Even so, both Intel and AMD simplify a majority of their chips into three categories such as the “good, better, best” which often starts with the Core i3/Ryzen 3, and enhances up to the Core i5/Ryzen 5, and concludes (in the conventional chip realm, at least) with the Core i7/Ryzen 7. Intel has released the Core i9 which has a premium tier in the market. However, when speaking for the plethora of users, these chips are not needed and far too pricey for a majority of the users’ cost budgets.

For those users who are on a limited budget, Intel provides its Pentium and Celeron chips (although Pentium is a bit faster) whereas AMD offers its Athlon line. When comparing on the utmost high-end part of the market, you can consider the Intel’s Core X series and the AMD’s Threadripper along with the Intel Core i9 which is already mentioned above.

So what about the model numbers which succeed after 3, 5, or 7? Well, as mentioned before, the first figure signifies the product (AMD’s Ryzen 5-2600 is basically a 2nd generation processor and the Intel Core i7-8700 is the 8th generation core processor).

The other remaining numbers signify a lot of different models in the line, wherein it is known that the higher digital is generally more advanced and better since it has additional cores or even higher clocks. Also, a “K” found at last part of an Intel chip would mean that it’s available for overclocking. But, an only certain amount of mainstream Intel chips have the “K” SKUs, whereas a majority of the AMD’s Ryzen processors are even permitted for overclocking even though there is no “K” designation involved or mentioned. Having an X found at the latter end of an AMD model number interprets elevated clock speeds. The best Intel processors are part of the 8th generation and provide astounding visual experiences.

Other Questions You Might Ask

Once you have finalised the final line and price range you may wish to purchase, there are still other few things you may need to consider as well.

Clock speeds are salient compared to core numbers

Having higher clock speeds would mean that you would achieve a remarkable performance in basic, usual tasks such as gaming, whereas having additional cores will support you by ensuring time-consuming workloads are done much faster than expected.

Always try aiming for the last generation

In reality, you will not be saving a lot of money in the near future if you consider purchasing a former chip.

A full system budget

We recommend you do not obtain a powerful CPU and complement it with a weaker RAM, graphics and storage.

Overclocking isn’t meant for everyone

For a majority of the people, it does make a lot of sense to purchase an element rather than purchasing a higher-end chip in the market.

Is It Overclockable?

When overclocking a CPU, users will achieve more performance levels but will need to pay for the thermal output, possible instability in the system and the costs for higher power consumption. Also, this is definitely not recommended to those users who are inexperienced, however, it can carry out a magnificent performance if done the right way.

Is There Cooler Available?

This is mostly forgotten, but it is still very essential. If users do not want to use the water cooler, then they should consider whether if the processor comes with a cooler or not. If it doesn’t, then you should consider purchasing a cooler, and at the same time, you will need to ensure that it supports your build. A majority of the processors do actually come with a cooler in the box, however, it doesn’t harm to check it out, just to be sure. Why we state this is because if you tend to operate without using a cooler then you will end up destroying your processor.

Can It Be Upgraded?

Even though this is mentioned previously, it is safe to repeat it right now as well: if you aim to upgrade, then do not consider purchasing for now. Currently, AMD processors would not be an idle choice since you may plan on enhancing your current system to the certified Best Ever™. However, AMD still seems to have few generations ahead to go before they start changing sockets. In addition, your CPU socket will decide your futuristic path to upgrading – but do avoid purchasing processors which only succour dead CPU sockets. The best Intel processors can be versatile and open to further upgrades in the future.

Is It Necessary To Overclock?

In simple terms, Overclocking is the method of using the CPU to its maximum limits by enabling it to operate at a higher-than-expected spec clock speeds. This is surely an art form which a majority of the fanatics enjoy practising. However, if you’re not up for viewing how fast you can your chip can operate without it crashing, then overclocking isn’t worth the time and money for you.

If you do want to ensure your CPU achieves elevated clock speeds than compared to the expected rate in the box, then you may want to invest in a little extra on a motherboard which is overclocking-friendly and an upgraded cooling system. If you wish to upgrade on an Intel chip, then you may want to purchase one of its K-series processors. As you factor in all these additional costs, then you may be better off purchasing a decent priced CPU which comes with increased clock speeds right out of the box. Do remember that, even if you still obtain all the essential equipment, it is still possible to damage the CPU by over pushing it or it may even end up with less-than-impressive results.

Lastly, which should you get?: AMD or Intel

Till 2017, AMD was known as the clear underdog. However, with the introduction of Ryzen and even the Ryzen 2 (2000 series) chips, the company was able to achieve an overall performance equality with Intel. There are few users who have unyielding opinions, but if you are not inclined towards neither of the brands, then it’s okay to be open with either of the options.

For Intel, they still clasp a small lead in terms of IPC (instructions per cycle, or rather, the number of instructions a chip is able to execute within a certain time period. This makes the chips better for tasks which are lightly-threaded such as using some Adobe software, playing many games, and surfing the web. Even so, AMD still provides more threads and cores, which makes it beneficial to those users who wish to use it for professional-grade animation and video editing.

Best Memory Cards in India 2019 – Reviews & Buyer’s Guide

Don’t you hate the message that says that you have run out of memory on your device? Do you hate it when you are in the middle of recording the perfect moment and you get a message displaying that there is no more space? Do you hate it when your files stop downloading midway due to lack of memory? The solution is quite obvious and it is to get more memory for your device.

This would mean either changing the entire device for one with more storage. But why spend so much when the memory can be expanded in just a fraction of the total cost? You can simply go for a the best memory card in India that will expand the storage on your smartphones or camera and give you the freedom to add more files and data to your device.

Some may think that buying a memory card is quite a simple process. You would just pop in your nearest retailer or go online and specify the type and capacity that you want. However, it is quite a complicated process since there are many factors which are associated with selecting the right memory card for your device.

Many people have reported that they bought a fake memory card and after a few weeks or months, the card corrupted and all the data was lost without any scope for recovery. A memory card should be one that you do not have to worry about. Backups should not be taken with a fear of loss of data due to corruption of the card but due to the loss of the device itself.

Factors To Consider When Choosing Memory Card

Due to the heavy competition in the market and the various brands competing to offer the most in the least possible price, there has been an increased noting of the feature list on each of the memory card. While this has been beneficial for the customers, the confusion that has ensued as a result of the increased feature list has not. If you are looking for the best memory cards in 2018, there are a few things that you should look out for. They are:

Physical Size

There is a wide range of memory cards available in the market depending on the physical size of the card itself. There are larger sized cards which are compatible with devices such as cameras. Others like the microSD card are compatible with almost all the phones available in the market today.

The types of memory cards according to their physical sizes are CompactFlash (CF), Secure Digital Card (SD card), MiniSD Card, MicroSD, MultiMediaCard (MMC), Sony Memory Sticks, SmartMedia, and xD-Picture Card. Depending upon the device that you intend to use the memory card in and the compatibility of the device itself, you can choose among the above mentioned types of memory cards.

Card Format

With the various devices in the market, you will notice that there is a wide variety of card formats available as well. There is the SD card, the SDHC card, and the SDXC card. The last one uses the exFAT format of storage capacity which makes it able to store more than 32 GB of data.

However, the SD card has up to 2 GB of storage while the SDHC has storage capacity from 2 GB to 32 GB. The format of the storage is different on each one. You should check with your device and see which one is supported by it.

Storage Capacity

This is perhaps the determining factor when you decide to buy a memory card. The storage capacity on a card determines how much additional space you will be getting to store your data on your device. There are high storage capacity memory cards available; some go as high as 2 TB. However, it is not necessary that your device will support such a high storage capacity card.

For instance, there are some smartphones which support microSD cards only up to 32 GB. In that case, you cannot insert a 128 GB memory card and expect it to work. The card will simply not be compatible with your device.

Card Working Speed

Each memory card is built around the framework that determines its class. The class of a memory card ranges from Class 1 to Class 10, the higher the better. Class 10 memory cards have the highest reading and writing speeds, meaning that you will find a seamless experience of adding and viewing files.

However, you should beware of the fake memory cards that proclaim that they are Class 10 but they actually belong to the lower end of the spectrum.

Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF)

When you are buying a memory card, you want one that will work almost indefinitely until you are ready to switch to one with a higher capacity when this one is full. This is why you should always look out for the Mean Time Before Failure of the memory card.

You will not necessarily find this data on the packaging of the card. Therefore, the best place to research about it is online. The best memory cards have a considerable lifespan and great reliability.

Read/Write Cycles

When you buy a card, you will notice that there is a mention of the total number of read/write cycles that the card can endure. After the number has been surpassed, the card usually corrupts. A typical memory card can endure 10,000 cycles of reading and writing before it corrupts. When you are out choosing a memory card, look for one that has the same cycles as above or more than that.

Warranty

You want your card to last long. Each time you go out to buy something electronic, do note the warranty period that the company is claiming. This will allow you to get your card fixed and the data recovered, if the card corrupts within the warranty period.

You should also check the packaging for the warranty card. Some companies claim the warranty on the outer packaging without providing a warranty card inside for claiming the said warranty.

Tolerance to Extreme Conditions

You never know what kind of a climatic condition you may find yourself in. Some days, it will be all cool and dry, the ideal weather conditions for the running of the electronic devices. However, there may arise times when you and your device may be subjected to extreme hot and humid weather.

At such a time, you should not be worried about the damage caused to your memory card and the data inside it. You should always buy memory cards which are resistant to high heat and humidity. This way, you can travel the world and not be worried about the data inside your memory card.

Card Brand

This is by far the most important thing to consider in a memory card. The brand on the card provides all the trust that you require in selecting the card. It also reflects on the build quality of the card as well as provides you the satisfaction about the information that is present on the packaging. There are some trusted and reputed brands which provide quite a typical memory card.

They do not boast of high figures since they know that the product will be tested and lying about the figures could mean a potential lawsuit against them. On the other hand, there are some companies which use made-up figures as a marketing strategy to show that their product is superior to others. This is why you should always go for a branded product since it is your data at stake.

Keeping in mind all the factors that are listed above, we have compiled a list of the best memory cards that are available in 2018. These memory cards will serve to provide you with the best possible usage and your data will be the safest within them. They are not easily prone to corruption and will continue to serve you for years. The best memory cards in 2018 are as follows:

The choice of features in a headphone is a subjective matter, but the fundamental would be cost, durability, battery life, connectivity, aesthetics, sound quality, build, electronic components and range of cable or wireless; to name a few. The more features there will be, the more beautiful the headphone be, or the more battery life it will have; more the price would be. But in a budget of 2000, all the above can be achieved, if eyes and ears are kept open.

Factors To Consider When Buying Best headphones under 2000

What are the different types of headphones?

There are mainly four types of good headphones, earbuds, over-ear, on-ear and in-ear.

Earbuds: These are cheaper because they are small and usually bundled with the smartphones and Mp3/MP4 players. They nicely fit inside the user’s ear, but they don’t seal it completely. Hence, they tend to be susceptible to a severe volume of sound leakage while few find them to be bit loose fitting for their comfort. In the beginning, they are good, but after some time, the audio experience is poor to worse.

Over-ear: These are the large headphones that have cushioned pads to cover the whole ear. It makes the user more comfortable to use for longer durations, while they do deliver excellent quality of sound. However, the bulky models are not much portable, but they can indeed be used at home. Though, there are some models which fold into a compact size and come in carrying cases, which can be used when travelling around town or between cities.

On-ear: These headphones are lighter and smaller than the above over-ear kind. On-ear headphones sit right onto the ears and have leatherette or foam pads on them to give additional comfort. Few of these models are foldable, which allows them to be portable. These on-ear headphones are in the middle of over-ear and in-ear segment of headphones. The former is good-sounding yet bulky, while the latter is weak-sounding yet portable.

In-ear: These headphones are the most bought accessories and sometimes bundled with portable music systems. These are portable and lightweight, while they are cheaper than the over-ear and on-ear kinds. In-ear headphones fit snugly in the ear-canal to render a good seal to minimise the leakage of sound. Though, quality of sound is usually poor than the over-ear as well as on-ear models; especially at the bass part.

Other than these four kinds of headphones, there are also few models that are meant for specific usage. These models include the sports headphones, which have additional features to keep them safe from sweat and water while keeping them in place at the time of exercise. Such headphones have ear clips or neckbands to ensure that they don’t fall. Some latest headphones allow the user to access the voice assistant of smartphones such as Apple’s Siri or Android’s Google Assistant. Thus, enabling the user to issue hands-free commands, by just speaking into the mic.

Wireless or Cable

The question is always if you shall buy a wireless headphone? It is because they give a lot of liberty to move around, do things and not worry about the cord breaking by mistake. Today majority of wireless headphones have the Bluetooth technology, whereas some do use infrared beams that are transmitted from an infrared base station.

Bluetooth technology: It is the most common feature in the wireless headphones as well as most of the tech devices. The Bluetooth connection utilises digital radio signals to transmit the sound to a receiving device. Its range is lesser than 10 m in most devices, but the best part is that the receiving device need not be in the line-of-sight. Hence, moving around in the house is more comfortable with Bluetooth connectivity.

Infrared technology: The remote control of a TV uses the same technology, infrared headphones utilise an IR beam for sound transmission from a base unit. The range is usually 7 m while a clear line-of-sight is needed between the base unit and headphone. Thus, the user cannot wander away from the clear range of the infrared base unit. Though, infrared is excellent for watching movies or just the TV or playing music from hi-fi or MP3/MP4 when around the base unit.

Noise cancelling models

It is always tempting to cut the external noise by increasing the headphone volume, but this usually annoys people around the user as well as it can cause partial or permanent deafness. Noise cancelling model is the best solution for such a situation. Investing in such models would render the liberty to listen at lower volumes, which will not be audible to others around the user.

The battery-powered electronics and tiny microphones that are fitted inside the headphones, produce the anti-noise signals to cut the external audio. Few headphones models utilise standard batteries of AAA size, but most of the new headphones have a built-in battery that can be recharged with USB cable. However, such headphones are a bit expensive, but within reach.

In-line remote

Since headphones are connected with Smartphones or music players, for every change of media; a user has to access the device manually. It would be best to get the headphone that supports in-line remote control. Such models have the facility to skip tracks, alter volume, or stop the music. Most of these models also have a mic to make or attend to voice calls; hands-free.

Battery

The in-built battery is the trend now. They may make the headphone a bit costly, but it is hassle-free. Also, looking for a battery that takes less time to charge, but gives more standby time and play time, is the best option to go for.

4. Locked or Unlocked Data Card by Network

Although, in India, most of the data cards work everywhere and they don’t have any issue. However, it is a vital nonetheless to find out if the data card works with other internet service provider’s network or not. Best Smartphones Under 5000 in July (Updated) – Reviews and Buyers Guide

Looking to buy a smartphone under the ₹5000 price tag? We understand that choosing the right mobile can be quite the struggle especially when on a tight budget. This is why we are here to help!

The smartphone is one of the easiest ways to access the internet. This makes it your key to the digital world but the price range can vary from cheap and affordable to very expensive. There are many high-end smartphones which provide cutting edge features like the best cameras but the price tag can be quite high. That being said, you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a basic smartphone that can cover all your needs.

Today we will look at the best smartphones under ₹5000 which provides all the essential features. This can be a first smartphone for many people or even a backup device. It also makes a good choice of smartphone for your parents or kid if you’re on a tight budget.

Buying the Best Mobile Phone Under 5000 – What to look for.

Here at NIDM we will simplify the various aspects of a smartphone like the camera, the battery, the software, etc. We will help you gain a clear understanding of what to expect and what you must look out for when buying the best smartphone under 5000 in India.

1) Display

Your smartphone’s display is one of the most important parts of the device. The screen plays a key role in the overall user experience which is why you should choose a smartphone with a good display. High end displays like AMOLED Panels offer deep blacks and vibrant colours. AMOLED provides the best quality but costs higher to produce. This is why it is only available on smartphones with a high price tag.

Luckily, display technology in smartphones has come a long way and one can now expect a good 5 – 5.5inch display for phones under ₹5000. The panel used can be LCD or TFT and both produce good colours and good viewing angles. LCD Panels with IPS technology provide superior viewing angles but are available only on some models in this price range.

Another important aspect is the screen’s resolution. The higher this is, the sharper things like images and text will appear on your device. You can expect a 720p display which will provide you with a clear viewing experience.

The latest devices on the market can also sport a taller screen with a 18:9 aspect ratio instead of the traditional 16:9. This gives you a larger screen while keeping the phone compact so it is easy to hold.

2) Protection

The materials used on the construction of a smartphone play a key role in how well it can survive an accidental drop. Devices made with aluminium has a higher chance of surviving a drop than ones made with glass. Both materials however, are more expensive to manufacture and are only available on devices in a higher price range.

Plastic is not as sturdy as aluminium but more durable than glass. You will find that most phones under the 5000 price tag use plastic for most of their construction besides the screen which is glass because it helps keep the costs low. The screen on most models will also not have any special protection like Corning Gorilla Glass to keep costs low. This is why we recommend applying a screen protector and a case for devices under 5K.

While you can’t expect special protection features, most devices in this price range will be able to handle regular daily use without any issues.

3) Camera

A smartphone helps you capture special moments in life so choosing one with a good camera is important. Some features like dual cameras, optical image stabilization etc. will not be available in the 5000 range. Most phones on the market offer a single rear camera that’s 8 – 13 Megapixels.

While these phones are not meant for photography, you can still get fairly clear shots as long as there is plenty of light. Basic features like Auto Focus, Digital Zoom and HDR will also be present. Low light photography should be avoided as photos taken in low light and dark areas would be much lower in quality. The flash at the back will be good for lighting up some objects but not a large area.

The front camera can range from 2 – 5 Megapixels. This can be used for taking very basic photos and video calling. If you are a selfie lover then you may want to increase your budget for devices with a better front camera.

4) Processor (System on a chip) SoC

The processor (CPU) is the brain of any smartphone. This part is responsible for making everything you do on your smartphone possible. From something as simple as making a call to using an app or a game it’s the processor doing all the work behind the scene.

There are many processors in the market right now. Some phones have processors which are designed to handle most basic tasks. While others like the processors found in flagship grade phones aim to offer the best cutting-edge performance.

Some examples of processors include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon lineup, Samsung’s Exynos and MediaTek’s MT series. You can expect a basic processor from Qualcomm or MediaTek in smartphones under the 5000 range. This can be a quad core chip with a speed of 1 – 1.5ghz.

These devices are good for most daily tasks such as browsing the web, calling, WhatsApp, etc. The performance for basic things will be smooth and you will not face any heavy lag or stuttering. That said, if you try heavy apps and games then you fill face a lot of slowdowns as the processor struggles to keep up.

5) RAM & GPU

Apps, games and all other data is stored in your phone’s internal memory. While this is ideal for storing data, it is too slow when you need to access data quickly like going through many apps. This is why your phone uses RAM or Random-Access Memory which is much faster than the internal memory for all its operational tasks.

The RAM is responsible for how well you can multi task. It stores things like apps so you can open them quickly. The higher the RAM the lesser need there is for the phone to load the app again from the slow internal storage.

Most phones in this price range will offer 1GB or 2GB as the RAM amount. 1GB would be sufficient for using one app at once and basic tasks but not for multi-tasking. If you want to use more than one app at once then at least 2GB would be necessary.

When it comes to gaming you can play simple games like temple run or subway surfers. Although, games like Asphalt 8 or PUBG will either face massive slowdowns or will not run at all. This is because the GPU or Graphics Processing Unit in these phones is only meant for simple low graphic games.

6) Storage

You may think that you don’t need a lot of storage but we recommend going with at least 16GB of internal memory. It is important to consider that some of the storage will already be used by the phone’s operating system. This can be as high as 50% used out of the box. Apps are also getting increasingly larger with every new update.

You can expect 8GB or 16GB storage in this price range. 8GB is sufficient only if you don’t plan to install many apps on your phone. This is if you need the device mainly for just calls and messaging. If you wish to store more media like videos then you can opt for a phone with a MicroSD slot. This can be expandable up to 64GB or 128GB.

It is also important to note that some phones don’t support moving apps to the SD card. Some apps also work only in the internal storage. Even when an app is moved to the SD card there will still be some internal storage used by the app. This is why adding a SD card will not always mean that you can install too many more apps.

7) Battery

It doesn’t matter how good a smartphone is if the battery can’t last at least a day of normal use. The battery capacity is generally shown in mAh units. You should expect 2000-3000mAh capacity for most phones under 5K. Some devices do offer battery capacities as high as 4000+ mAh making them great for battery life.

The battery technology that is used in this price range is mainly Li-Ion which provides good performance. Some models may have a Li-Polymer battery which are thinner but these are more expensive to manufacture.

Most devices in the market right now come with a sealed non removable battery. However, there still are some models which may provide a removable battery.

8) Ports & Wireless communications

Access to fast internet has been spreading rapidly throughout the country thanks to 4G LTE. All devices in this price range will support for 4G LTE. You can also expect dual sim support although not all phones will support 4G on both SIMs.

You can also expect all basic wireless features such as Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. Some features like NFC and Wireless charging are only available on high end devices so those will not be available.

For wired connections most devices in the mid to high range come with Type C ports. However, budget devices under 5000 still have the older MicroUSB 2.0 port. This is not a major drawback as it helps keep the costs low.

Since the manufacturers don’t need to make these devices too slim, they keep the 3.5mm jack. Most devices in this price range will come with the 3.5mm headphone jack.

9) Speakers & Sensors

Audio quality on your smartphone is not only important for listening to music but also making sure you hear calls clearly. If the speaker is not loud then you may miss calls when in a noisy environment. Some special features like dual speakers provide wider stereo sound but is only available on a few models.

Smartphones in this range are not designed for audio quality through speakers. That said, you can expect the devices to be loud enough to hear the device in most environments. The vibration motor is also present.

Sensors are another important aspect of your phone’s user experience. While you can’t expect to get all the sensors, the 2 basic sensors should be covered. The proximity sensor allows your phone’s screen to turn off when you place it to your ear. The accelerometer makes motion sensing possible for things like gaming and auto rotate.

10) Software

Hardware specs are very important but can be considered only half the deciding factor when it comes to user experience. The second half is – The Software. While all devices in this price range run Android, which version and custom UI it has can make a big difference. Even the fastest hardware will struggle to run smoothly if the software is poorly optimized.

The latest version of Android is 9.0 Pie and you should expect a device that runs on 9.0 Pie or at the very least 8.1 Oreo. Some devices may also have the “Go Edition” of Android which is designed to use less space for low end devices.

The cleanest version of Android is called “Stock Android”. This sometimes does not have many extra features but is the fastest and easiest to use.

A Custom UI is the manufacturers take on Android to make it more unique. Manufacturers add things like special apps and features that you will not find on Stock Android. But sometimes too many preinstalled apps and unnecessary features can also slow down the phone.

Now that we have covered all the important aspects of a smartphone let’s take a look our picks for the 10 best smartphones under 5k. This list is specially curated to help you pick the device that suits you best.

Top 10 Best Smartphones under 5000

1) XOLO ERA 4X (2GB+16GB)

XOLO is an Indian mobile company which has been offering smartphones for many years now. While their devices lack behind the competition in the mid to high range, they have some compelling offers in the ultra-budget range.

One of their newest offerings – The XOLO ERA 4X sports a 5.45 IPS 18:9 HD+ Display with Corning® Gorilla® Glass protection. For the price tag this is one of the best screens in the budget market.

On the front we also see a 5MP selfie camera with a front LED flash. The quality is good only for the most basic selfies taken in a very well-lit environment. There is no fingerprint sensor but the device supports face unlock.

On the back there’s an 8MP camera with support for features like Beauty mode, HDR etc. This performs much better than its selfie counterpart. That said, low light photography is still one of the weakest aspects of this camera.

Powering up the phone is a MediaTek MT6739 1.5ghz Quad Core processor. This will run most basic apps with ease as long as you don’t try intensive games. There is support for 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.  Essential sensors like the accelerometer, proximity and light sensor are also present.

The device runs on Android 8.1 Oreo Go Edition with the Star OS V5.0 interface. While the device doesn’t lag, we wish that XOLO would have opted for a completely stock interface. Star OS V5.0 has some useful features but there is also some unnecessary bloatware that could be removed.

Battery life is good for a day’s use with a 3000mAh unit. You also get the 3.5mm headphone jack and a MicroSD card. The USB port is MicroUSB 2.0 and not Type-C but that is normal for this price range.

2) Nokia 1 (1GB+8GB)

The Nokia 1 is one of the cheapest android devices in India. While the hardware is underpowered when compared to the competition, the device excels on the software side. The device launched with Android 8.1 Oreo Go Edition but has been updated to Android 9.0 Pie Go Edition. Nokia has also kept the device free from unnecessary apps and bloatware.

The screen is a small 4.5inch IPS LCD Display with a low 480p resolution. This is easily one of the biggest drawbacks of the device but the small size also helps make the device very compact. This can be a benefit if you want a phone that is easy for one handed use.

The device is made of plastic but is built fairly well and has a removable battery. The battery capacity is only 2150mAh but since the screen is small it also uses less power. This helps the device last at least a day of light to normal use. It also supports 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and even FM Radio. Nokia has also retained the headphone jack and the USB port is Micro USB 2.0.

The MediaTek MT6737M is 1.1ghz Quad Core processor that can handle basic apps but that’s about it. You can also do some basic gaming but nothing with high graphics.  The RAM is also only 1GB but it manages to stay smooth for most basic tasks.

The cameras are as basic as it gets with a 5MP rear unit and a 2MP selfie unit. The storage is also only 8GB but you do get MicroSD support. The Nokia 1 is not meant for heavy users. This device makes a great choice if you need an ultra affordable compact smartphone for basic tasks with up to date software.

3) Micromax BHARAT5 Infinity Edition (1GB+16GB)

The BHARAT5 Infinity Edition from Micromax is a battery champ. The device rocks a 5000mAh battery to make frequent low battery warnings a thing of the past. The device has a clean design but it a bit bulky due to the large battery. It also offers a fingerprint sensor on the back.

The display has a modern 18:9 ratio. It’s a 5.45inch IPS LCD panel and has a 720p resolution. The quality is on par with other devices in this range.

At its core lies the MediaTek MT6739 1.5ghz Quad core processor. The performance is fairly good for most basic apps. You can also expect to do some basic gaming. Although, since the RAM is only 1GB you can’t expect anything intensive. The internal memory is 16GB.

The camera offering is weak with just a 5MP sensor at the back and a 5MP sensor in front. You can expect only very basic photos but the device does offer a front facing LED flash for selfies.

The software side is kept simple with Android 8.1 Oreo but there is some bloatware. Most wireless essentials are covered with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and Radio. There is a MicroUSB 2.0 port and the accelerometer and proximity sensor.

While the specs are mediocre and the cameras are basic, this a good option if battery life is your priority.
